What the census says about Redbank
It is a small suburb. The 2021 Census counted 2,931 people with a median age of 30, eight years younger than Queensland overall. The median household earned $1,321 a week, against $1,675 across the state.
Two figures matter to an accountant. More than one resident in nine was born in New Zealand, nearly three times the Queensland share. And 55% of occupied homes were rented, compared with about a third statewide.
The work is physical. Labourers (18.5%) and machinery operators and drivers (16.6%) were the two largest occupation groups, and road freight was among the top industries. Managers were 4.7% of employed residents, against 12.5% for Queensland.
The return due at the end of October
For most people here the yearly job is an individual tax return. The usual problems are small ones: a second job left off, or a deduction claimed with no receipt behind it.
If you lodge yourself, the return is due by 31 October, or the next business day when that falls on a weekend, as it does in 2026. A registered tax agent can lodge later, but only if you are on the agent's client list by 31 October itself. The ATO does not push that cut-off to the Monday. If a return from an earlier year is still outstanding, the later dates generally don't apply, so talk to us well before the end of October. The tax return questionnaire is the quickest way to start, and the key dates page has the rest of the year.
Moved here from New Zealand
Australia–New Zealand tax is the practice's speciality, which suits a suburb where so many people were born across the Tasman. The starting rule is plain. If you are an Australian resident for tax purposes, your New Zealand income goes on your Australian return: rent from a house in Hamilton, interest on a New Zealand bank account.
The harder question is residency itself, for someone who came for work, kept a house back home and hasn't decided whether to stay. Citizenship and visa don't settle it on their own. Tax already paid to Inland Revenue on the same income can usually be claimed as a foreign income tax offset, and that amount is where returns most often go wrong. Our trans-Tasman page and moving from New Zealand to Brisbane cover it in more detail.
If you own one of the rented houses
More than half of Redbank's homes are rented, so a good number of people own a house here they don't live in. If one of them is yours, the rent and expenses go on your return every year, and the purchase and improvement records you keep now are what you will need when you sell. The property investors guide sets out what to keep.
Driving or working a trade on an ABN
If you drive or work a trade for yourself on an ABN, the paperwork changes. Your return carries a business schedule, GST registration becomes compulsory at $75,000 of GST turnover (or from the first dollar if you drive a taxi or rideshare), and BAS follows from that. The records carry more weight than a wage earner's, because the business schedule is built from them.
A business that pays contractors for courier or road freight work, building and construction, cleaning, IT, or security, investigation or surveillance may also need to lodge a taxable payments annual report, due 28 August each year.
We keep books in Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks, lodge BAS, run payroll and handle the ABN, GST and company registrations a new business needs. The fee is agreed and fixed before we start, so a quarterly BAS doesn't turn into an open-ended bill. How our fees work explains how a quote is put together.
Before 31 October comes round
Fill in the new client form or send a note through Get in touch. Say what needs doing and by when. If the October cut-off is close, put that in the first line.
Common questions
Yes. We meet clients in person by arrangement in the Brisbane and Ipswich area, or online. Send a message through the contact form and we will arrange a time and a place.
If you are an Australian resident for tax purposes, yes. Australian residents declare their foreign income, and New Zealand rent is part of it. Residency comes first, and citizenship or a visa doesn't decide it on its own. Tax paid in New Zealand on that rent may be claimable as a foreign income tax offset. This is general information: get advice on your own residency and the offset before you lodge.
Your invoices or payment statements from the businesses you contract to, fuel, repair, registration and insurance records for the vehicle, any finance paperwork, and your BAS if you are registered for GST. A contractor's return includes a business schedule, so the records carry more weight than they do for a wage earner.
