The 2021 Census counted 24,349 people in Redbank Plains. Queensland Places gives the 2006 count as 8,307, so the suburb close to tripled in 15 years. Close to three residents in ten were under 15. Across Queensland it was fewer than one in five.
Of the suburb's families, 44.9% were couples with children and 27.8% were one-parent families, against 16.8% statewide. Of occupied homes, 57.8% were rented and about one in ten was owned outright.
When the tax return decides the family payment
Close to three families in four here have children at home, so many of them are dealing with Services Australia as well as the ATO. Family Tax Benefit is paid during the year on an estimate of income and balanced afterwards against what you and your partner actually earned.
To balance it, Services Australia needs each of you to lodge a tax return, or tell it you don't need to, within 12 months after the financial year ends. One partner's return sitting unlodged holds up the whole family's figures, so both returns need to go in, with the income right on each.
Had a baby, separated or moved in with someone during the year? Put it on the tax return questionnaire. A change of partner or a new child alters the spouse and dependant details on the return, and Services Australia will want the same picture.
Renting now, buying later
With most homes in the suburb rented, a lot of households here will be saving for a first one. Two government schemes apply, one to the deposit and one to transfer duty, and both have conditions to meet before you sign a contract.
The first home super saver scheme lets you make voluntary contributions to super and later release them for a deposit. Up to $15,000 of voluntary contributions from any one financial year can count, and $50,000 in total. Only 85% of before-tax contributions, such as salary sacrifice, counts towards the release. You must ask the ATO for an FHSS determination before ownership of the property transfers to you.
The second is Queensland's. For contracts dated 1 May 2025 or later, a first home buyer of a new home pays no transfer duty, and there is no value cap. You have to move in within a year of settlement, and selling the home or leasing all of it within a year of moving in can cost you some or all of the concession. The Queensland Revenue Office sets the conditions.
This is general information. Whether salary sacrificing into super suits you depends on your income and how soon you expect to buy, so get advice before the first contribution.
Still tied to New Zealand
The census counted 2,405 Redbank Plains residents born in New Zealand. Anyone who studied there before the move may still have a student loan with Inland Revenue.
That loan stays interest-free only while you are New Zealand based. Inland Revenue treats you as overseas based if you spend fewer than 32 days in New Zealand in a 184-day period, and interest then runs from the day after you left. Repayments for an overseas-based borrower are set by the loan balance, not by income.
Then there is the Australian side. As an Australian tax resident you declare New Zealand interest and rent on your return here, and a KiwiSaver balance you want to bring across has its own transfer rules. Residency and double tax are set out under trans-Tasman taxation, and KiwiSaver and Australian super deals with moving the savings.
Working with us from Redbank Plains
We work with clients across Brisbane and Ipswich, and meet in person by arrangement. A video call does the same job if getting out of the house with small children is its own project. Use Get in touch to say what you need, and we'll suggest a time and somewhere to meet.
Paperwork can be emailed, handed over when we meet, or sent with one of the site's forms. The fee is fixed and agreed before any work begins. The fees page sets out how a quote is built.
Common questions
Yes. Services Australia balances Family Tax Benefit against the income of both of you, and each partner has to lodge a return, or tell Services Australia they don't need to, within 12 months after the end of the financial year. If one return is missing, the family's payment can't be balanced. We can prepare both returns together.
Before you start making the extra contributions, and well before you buy. The ATO counts up to $15,000 of voluntary contributions from any one year and $50,000 in total, and you must request a determination before ownership of the property transfers to you. This is general information: whether it suits you depends on your income and your timing, so get advice on your own situation first.
Probably, if you live here. Inland Revenue treats a borrower as overseas based after spending fewer than 32 days in New Zealand in a 184-day period, and from then the loan is no longer interest-free, backdated to the day after you left. Repayments are worked out from the loan balance. Check your status in myIR, and tell us about the loan when we look at your New Zealand affairs.
