How we work with Brisbane clients
Tax Doctorz works with clients across Brisbane and Ipswich, and across Australia and New Zealand. We do not publish a street address. Meetings happen in person by arrangement, or online. If you work in the city, an online meeting at lunchtime saves the travel.
A tax return or a set of company accounts is built from documents, so where you live in Brisbane changes very little. You can email them, hand them over at a meeting, or send them through the forms on this site. There is no client portal and no e-signature system to learn.
If you live in the western corridor, our areas pages say more about the suburbs there, from Redbank Plains and Goodna out to Springfield Central. If you are on the northside or the bayside, it works the same way.
What a chartered accountant and tax agent does for you
Two credentials sit behind the name. Our principal is a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (membership number 2147512) and holds a Certificate of Public Practice, so the practice works to its professional standards. We are also registered with the Tax Practitioners Board as a tax agent, number 26343636. The TPB registration is the one that lets us charge you to prepare and lodge a return: the ATO says only a registered tax agent can do that for a fee, and the ATO's page on using a tax agent explains how to check one.
Individuals and investors
For someone on a salary, the job is an accurate return with the deductions your work supports, and the records the ATO expects you to keep behind each one. For investors it goes further: rental schedules, depreciation and the capital gain when something is sold. Our tax and compliance page covers the returns, and the property investors guide covers rentals in more depth.
Businesses
For a sole trader, partnership, company or trust, the work is the books, GST and BAS, payroll and Single Touch Payroll, the annual return, and the advice that comes before a decision. That might be whether to move from sole trader to a company, how to handle money taken out of a company, or what a large equipment purchase does to this year's tax. Registration for GST becomes compulsory once GST turnover reaches $75,000. We work in Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks, whichever you already use. See accounting and operations and strategic tax advisory.
People with a foot in New Zealand
Australia–New Zealand tax is a specialty of the practice. If you have moved across the Tasman, or still have a rental, a business or a KiwiSaver account on the other side, read moving from New Zealand to Brisbane and the trans-Tasman service.
Queensland taxes a Brisbane client runs into
Income tax works the same in every state. Two Queensland taxes are different: land tax and payroll tax are collected by the Queensland Revenue Office, not the ATO. What follows is general information on the thresholds; exemptions and grouping rules depend on your facts, so get advice before relying on them.
Land tax
Queensland land tax is assessed on the land you own at midnight on 30 June. The figure used is the land's taxable value, worked out from the Valuer-General's annual land valuation. It is generally the lower of this year's valuation and the average of the last three, and it has nothing to do with the price you paid.
An individual is liable once the total taxable value of their Queensland freehold land, including their share of anything owned jointly, is $600,000 or more. Land you use as your home may be exempt. Companies and trustees, including the trustee of a self-managed super fund, start paying at $350,000. That gap is one reason to settle who will own an investment property before you sign the contract.
This is the Queensland Revenue Office's own example, not a client's. An individual whose Queensland land has a total taxable value of $680,000 falls in the $600,000 to $999,999 band, which is $500 plus 1 cent for each dollar over $600,000. The $80,000 excess adds $800, so the land tax is $1,300 for the year.
Land tax on a rental property is generally deductible. The ATO lists it alongside council rates, water rates and loan interest as costs you can claim while the property is held to produce rent.
Payroll tax
Payroll tax applies once an employer's annual Australian taxable wages pass $1.3 million. For a group of related employers the threshold is tested on the group's combined wages. That catches owners who run two or three businesses that are each comfortably under the line on their own. The rate is 4.75% for employers or groups paying $6.5 million or less in Australian taxable wages, and 4.95% above that. The QRO notes you may need to register before you have any liability.
For a growing employer the time to look at it is while a second entity or a round of hiring is still a plan. The federal obligations carry on alongside it. Since 1 July 2026 super guarantee contributions must reach each employee's fund within seven business days after payday, which our note on payday super walks through.
The 31 October line
If you lodge your own return, the usual deadline is 31 October. Most registered agents run a lodgement program that gives their clients a later date, but the ATO is clear that your due date depends on your situation and when you engage the agent. If you are coming to a tax agent for the first time, or changing agents, the ATO says to make contact before 31 October. The full year is laid out on our key dates page.
How to start
Tell us what you need
Use Get in touch and write a few lines: a personal return, a rental, a business, something with New Zealand in it. That is enough for a first conversation.
Complete the new client form
The new client form gives us the details to set you up before any work starts.
Agree the scope and the fee
We tell you what the job involves and what it will cost, as a fixed fee, before we begin. How our fees work explains what shapes a quote.
Send your documents
By email, in person or through the site's forms. For a personal return, the tax return questionnaire walks through what to gather.
Check it, then we lodge
You see the return or the accounts before anything goes to the ATO. Questions go to your one direct contact.
Common questions
No. We meet in person by arrangement in the Brisbane and Ipswich area, or online. Documents can be emailed, handed over at a meeting or sent through the website forms, so where you live in Brisbane makes no difference to the work.
Yes. We work with clients across Brisbane and Ipswich, and clients come from across Australia and New Zealand. We do not publish a street address. Brisbane clients meet us in person by arrangement or online.
It depends on the total taxable value of all your Queensland freehold land at 30 June, not on any one property. Individuals are liable at $600,000 or more, and companies and trustees, including SMSF trustees, at $350,000 or more. Your home may be exempt. The value used is the land valuation, not the purchase price. If you are close to a threshold, or deciding whose name to buy in, get advice before you sign.
When annual Australian taxable wages exceed $1.3 million. If your business is grouped with related employers, the threshold applies to the group's combined wages. The rate is 4.75% up to $6.5 million of Australian taxable wages and 4.95% above it. The QRO says you may need to register even before you owe anything.
Yes. The ATO says that if you are using a tax agent for the first time, or changing agents, you should contact them before 31 October to be part of their lodgement program. Your due date then depends on your situation. If you have missed earlier years, those returns can still be lodged, and getting up to date sooner may help you avoid interest and late lodgement penalties.
